Hi, I am complete newbie on this forum and also not very good with working in cars. So please accept my apologies up front if I’ve got anything wrong.
I have a problem with our Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6HDi Exclusive, which you may be able to help me with.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
For the last few weeks the Pic has had problems starting in the morning, where the engine seems to miss (just like a petrol engine) for about 5 seconds and then it runs just fine. Unfortunately I completly ignored the warning signs and the car died a few days ago. There are no warning lights shown on the dash, the engine turns over OK, and it tries to start (just like its missing), but can’t quite make it. Sounds just like fuel staravtion right?
Following advice from this forum and mate who knows more than me about cars, I decided to replace the fuel filter as it has not done since purchasing the car from new in 2004! See attached photo of this filter.
I replaced the filter reasonably easily, but the problem seems exactly the same, with the engine trying to start.
Take note that the replacement filter didn’t have the electrical connection available at the bottom of the filter housing and believe that this is a sensor? So this connection is currently not fitted. The filter heater is fitted OK.
I decided to disconnect the top inlet/outlet pipe to see if any fuel was reaching it. With the ignition turned on, or by trying to start the car, no fuel comes out of the pipe or filter?
Questions:
1) Surely fuel should come out of the fuel filter disconnected pipe?
2) What test can I do to ensure that the fuel pump needs replacing before I go to the expense of purchasing one?
3) I believe that the fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. I have only just filled it, so guess I’m going to have to drain the whole tank if I need to replace the fuel pump?
4) Am I missing something.
Thanks in advance

You need it on Diagnostics , these cars have a DPF which could be blocked .
